Barbecue Meatballs

I declare this the week of meatballs! They just keep popping up over and over. My parents served meatballs when we went to visit them this week. Then the in-laws served meatballs at dinner when we visited them this week. Then my kids just wanted to watch Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs. So I took the hint.

These are a family favorite from way back when. I’ve talked about my awesome neighbor Koleen before. These meatballs were originally her recipe. We ate these BBQ meatballs a lot as kids. We loved them. And guess what, my kids love them also!

One of my favorite things about these meatballs is they are great as a make ahead dish, great as a frozen dish, or great as a take in dish.

We always serve them with baked potatoes. It’s traditional. They have a tangy and sweet barbecue type sauce, that is irresistable.

A couple notes about this recipe.

These meatballs are coated in flour before being baked. This step is optional, but helps to thicken the sauce.

Feel free to use ground beef or ground turkey. I prefer ground turkey. And you can really use anything for the breadcrumbs. I used ground up cheerios the last time I made them and they were fabulous!

Make sure you chop your onions really finely, or else there will be big chunks of onion in your meatballs. I don’t know about you, but my kids are allergic to big chunks of onion in anything. (And by allergic, I mean, it makes them really whiny.)

Happy week of meatballs! Go make some today.

Koleen’s BBQ Meatballs

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: About 25-30 meatballs, serves 4-6

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey (I use ground turkey)
  • 1 cup fine bread or cracker crumbs
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • For the Sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  1. Mix beef or turkey, bread crumbs, egg, onion and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Form mixture into golf ball sized meatballs.
  3. Place flour into a small mixing bowl. Mix with salt.
  4. Roll each meatball in the flour, tap to remove the excess flour before placing the meatballs in a 9x13 baking dish.
  5. Set aside.
  6. Make the sauce by combining the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, water and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl. Stir until well combined.
  7. Pour sauce over meatballs.
  8. Bake at 375 for about 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce is bubbly and thickened.
