Chewy Pumpkin Chocolate CookiesI love this time of year.  My kids will tell you that every time of year is my favorite.  I get so excited when the seasons change. And there is a special place in my heart for autumn.

I love the feeling of the days growing shorter and the evenings growing cozier.

I love  the feeling of crunching leaves beneath my feet, the sight of leaf covered lawns and bare trees.  Smoke rising from chimneys, bales of hay and piles of pumpkins.

I love chilly days.  Pink cheeked children running home from school.

I love the smells and the tastes of autumn.  Simmering hot cocoa. Cinnamon. Cloves. Nutmeg. And pumpkin.  Pumpkin is my favorite. 

Yes please to everything and anything pumpkin.

I am not usually the one who posts recipes around here.  Anita is the food guru.  And while I won’t be showing you the state of my knives – I’ll be happy to share my favorite holiday treats.  This is the time of year that I bake like it’s going out of style.  I’m drawn to the warmth of the oven and the shared excitement of something delicious. And, of course, I love the memories.  It’s not ALL about the food.  But the food gives life to the memories and brings them back time and time again.

One treat that we enjoy time and time again at my house is pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. And this recipe is absolutely the best that I have found. It is not complicated, which is a must for a me.  And it takes the pumpkin chocolate chip cookie to the next level.  Rather than tasting like little pumpkin cake bites (which are also delicious, don’t get me wrong), these cookies have the actual texture of moist and chewy, sink your teeth in, chocolate chip cookies.

You’ll notice that there are no eggs listed in the ingredients. It turns out that this is the reason for their sublime texture.  The pumpkin puree works in place of the eggs.  You’ll have to ask Anita why this works so well.  I don’t really know.  All I know is that I’m going to have to fit in an extra 10 hours at the gym this month to make up for how delicious these cookie taste.

Chewy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 55 minutes

Yield: About 18 cookies

Serving Size: 1 cookie

Chewy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies


  • 1/2 cup (1 cube) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 Tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips


  1. In a medium bowl, mix softened butter and sugars until smooth. Stir in vanilla and pumpkin puree.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Stir.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients. Mix together. Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. Chill the dough for 30 minutes. This is very important!
  5. Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Roll into balls. The balls will not spread out much in the oven so flatten them a little.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes. They won’t quite look done, but take them out anyway.
  7. Cool for 10 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.
  8. The taste and texture is best when fully cooled.
